Georgia's accession process to the European Union (EU) has effectively stalled, and its candidate country status has become merely a formality, APA's local bureau reports, citing a statement issued by the European Commission.
It was noted that Georgia continues to fail to implement the nine steps outlined in the Commission's recommendation for candidate status.
"Unless the Georgian authorities change their course and return to the fundamental principles underlying EU membership, the country will not be able to benefit from either candidate status or the accession preparation process," the statement said.
Recall that Georgia was granted EU candidate country status in December 2023. On November 28, 2024, the Georgian government announced that it would not put EU accession negotiations on the agenda until 2028. The government stated that Georgia would be better prepared for EU membership in 2030.
