The National Cybersecurity Agency (NCA) has warned of cyberattack risks targeting refrigeration equipment, APA-Economics reports, citing the agency.
According to the National Cybersecurity Agency, cyberattacks targeting the control systems of refrigeration and freezing equipment have been recorded in several European countries in recent weeks.
"On October 11, 2026, hundreds of supermarkets in France were reportedly affected by these attacks, while similar incidents were reported on November 2 in Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands and Estonia. The scope of the threat is not limited to the retail sector. Reports of interference with refrigeration equipment used at a blood bank in France indicate that such attacks also pose risks to the healthcare sector.
During the attacks, cybercriminals gain unauthorized access to the control systems of refrigeration and freezing equipment, switching them to defrost mode or raising temperature settings to as high as 50°C. The fact that the incidents occur mainly at night means that the interference may remain undetected until morning, resulting in stored products becoming unusable.
The main targets of the attacks are control interfaces directly accessible via the internet. In this context, particular attention is focused on the Danfoss AK-SM 800 and AK-SC 355 models, which are no longer supported by the manufacturer, AK-SM 800A controllers running outdated software, as well as Copeland XWEB and Dixell XWEB systems. According to preliminary assessments, the main vulnerabilities behind the incidents include unchanged default login credentials and failure to update software in a timely manner.
The consequences of such interference are not limited to financial losses. Disruption of temperature conditions may lead to equipment failure, fire risks, and violations of the required storage conditions for medicines and other medical products.
