As the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) to be held in Baku approaches, it once again becomes apparent that some leading states and organizations do not fully understand the responsibility they bear regarding the disaster awaiting humanity.
The latest example of this is the report that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will not attend the world's leading climate summit and will not come to Baku.
The report, citing a European Commission representative, states that "the European Commission is in a state of transition, so Ursula von der Leyen will deal with her institutional responsibilities."
This incomprehensible step, in addition to raising many questions, also revealed that the head of the European Commission prioritizes procedural matters over the global climate summit, a fateful event for the future of the world.
Ursula von der Leyen's announcement that she will not attend COP29 once again demonstrated that neither she nor the organization she leads are concerned about international public opinion, global problems, and issues that could bring disaster to all of humanity, such as climate change.
The main reason for von der Leyen's absence from COP29, which makes internal EU processes excuses, is something else. It's no secret that COP29 is being called a kind of "financial COP" because of its focus on expanding financial solidarity programs.
Such climate finance covers helping low-income states transition to a zero-carbon economy and helping the most affected regions adapt to the impacts of new climate change. The main objective of COP29 is to increase this financing and set new targets in this area.
For this purpose, the summit to be held in Baku aims to establish a Climate Finance Action Fund. It is planned to raise $1 billion in capital to launch the fund and have at least 10 donor countries to support the fund.
The European Union, which pollutes the planet the most, is not attending the COP to evade responsibility, while the countries of the world expect new climate finance from it, and are avoiding responsibility.
The European Union, which pollutes the planet the most, does not come to COP to evade responsibility and practically evade responsibility while the countries of the world expect new climate finance from it.
It is no coincidence that during COP26, held in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2021, the US and the European Union also blocked a proposal to create a financial mechanism to help countries vulnerable to climate change to cope with economic losses and damages.
As it appears, the West prioritizes its political ambitions in the fight against global climate change and does not fully exert its efforts in combating the collective disaster that humanity faces.
On the other hand, Ursula von der Leyen, who said that "the European Union should be an example to the world in climate protection", showed that she was insincere in her words with her last step and that the plans she announced were only slogans.
Ursula von der Leyen's absence from COP29, after participating in the COP26 summit in Glasgow, COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, and COP28 in Dubai, highlights that the entire Western policy is being directed in the wrong direction, with geopolitical interests and the commercial side of the issue being the main focus.
The President of the European Commission is pursuing a policy that focuses on creating tension points in various countries around the world and increasing arms production, rather than addressing current problems.
A clear example of this can be seen in the policies related to Ukraine and Armenia. Instead of advancing peace initiatives in the South Caucasus, official Brussels has effectively planned to redraw borders in the region by deploying military observers under the guise of a monitoring mission.
Instead of allocating funds to combat climate change, the EU decided to allocate 10 million euros from the European Peace Fund in July 2024 to strengthen the Armenian Armed Forces. All these steps demonstrated that for official Brussels, the climate crisis is not a priority.
Along with Ursula von der Leyen, many Western politicians are also displaying similar behavior. Norway's refusal to participate in COP29, as well as the absence of French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Joe Biden from the summit, further proves that these countries do not consider climate action a priority, have sidelined their commitments to humanity, and are unwilling to provide support to countries suffering due to climate change.
The refusal of Von der Leyen and other Western officials to attend COP29 can be seen more as a blow to their own credibility as politicians.
In any case, from November 11 to 22, Baku will become the center of the world, hosting up to 100 heads of state and government within the framework of COP29, the countries' plans on climate change will be agreed upon, and practical steps will be taken in this regard.
