The PKK or Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, the European Union, and other countries announced its dissolution on May 12.
This decision was made based on the call to "lay down your weapons" in a written appeal to his supporters by the imprisoned leader and founder of the terrorist organization, Abdullah Öcalan, on February 27, 2025.
In the message released on behalf of Öcalan, it stated: “All groups must disarm and the PKK must be dissolved. I am calling to lay down arms, and I take historical responsibility for this call.”
PKK's decision: A historic step towards the end of a 40-Year Conflict
Following this, on March 1, 2025 the PKK terrorist organization announced a ceasefire and stated that it was ready to hold a congress in response to Öcalan’s call.
Both individual officials and political experts call this decision a "historic moment" that will change the geopolitical situation in the region, end the armed conflict that has lasted for more than 40 years and lead to the establishment of peace in the region.
The whole world is paying attention to how this decision of the organization, which was founded by Abdullah Öcalan on November 27, 1978, with the aim of establishing self-government in the region covering eastern and southeastern Türkiye, northern Iraq, northeastern Syria, and northwestern Iran and taking possession of the lands in question, and which has caused the deaths of more than 40,000 people as a result of its attacks and terrorist acts, will change the situation in the region.
All eyes are on the KCK
Currently in Erbil, the administrative center of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, political expert on Middle East and Turkish journalist Güngör Yavuzaslan, who closely follows the events unfolding in the region, has commented the latest situation to APA.
Güngör Yavuzaslan emphasized that the decision of the PKK terrorist organization to lay down arms and dissolving itself is still recent and highlighted the importance of carefully monitoring what will happen next:
"Will they give up on right-wing experiences and weapons, will the organization members come down from their camps in the mountains – these are the things to watch. They called the decisions they made at the congress held on May 5-7 "historic decisions". If it were an ordinary meeting, they wouldn’t have used the term 'historic decision,' they wouldn’t have raised the idea of laying down arms so loudly. The most important point here is the announcement of the decision text and the fact that the text coincides with Öcalan’s call. Another important factor is that apart from the organization, no other demands or clauses that could cause discussions in Türkiye should come forward. On the other hand, the main focus should be on what steps the KCK (Koma Civakên Kurdistanê - Kurdistan Communities Union), which brings together the PKK, PYD, PJAK, and PÇDK, will take. What decision will the KCK make? A similar decision should be announced on behalf of the KCK Executive Committee or the umbrella organization so that its branches in Syria, Iran, and other countries also comply with it. This is one of the most critical points. Öcalan is sending calls to all the groups. In this regard, attention must be paid to these points in the text. Sources say that this will take a few days. The main issue is that Öcalan’s call to lay down arms must be implemented quickly. It must be followed, because within the PKK’s 'hierarchical' structure, they are obliged to obey the will embodied in Öcalan, who is the leader or leader figure. Along with this detail, there is also a reason for me to draw attention to the KCK. Because now, apart from Öcalan, there are 4-5 decision-makers in the organization. My impression is that we are currently going through the process of editing their decision, meaning transforming it into a final text."
The fate of the weapons
Gungor Yavuzaslan emphasized that the most important aspect for Türkiye is the disarmament and dissolution of the organization: "If this happens, PKK will become history. But what will happen to the weapons and money of the terrorist organization, where will the leaders of the organization go, and will those returning to Türkiye face punishment and trial? These issues must also be clarified."
He also pointed out that the decision and roadmap provided by Turkish President Erdoğan is crucial.
"After the operations of the Turkish military, the PKK terrorist organization can no longer do anything within the country. Türkiye will cooperate with Iraq and Syria to eliminate the organizational structures in northern Iraq and Syria, and make the northern parts of Iraq and Syria safe again. We are witnessing historic moments right now – Türkiye continues to move forward on the path to becoming a superpower," he concluded.
