Energy security is one of the most important factors of national security, President Ilham Aliyev said in a press statement with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, APA reports.
“Four years ago, the President of the European Commission's visit to Azerbaijan was also of great importance from this perspective. During that visit, we signed the Memorandum of Understanding on a Strategic Partnership in the Field of Energy. Since then, Azerbaijan's natural gas exports to the member states of the European Union have increased by approximately 65 percent. Currently, half of our gas exports are destined for European Union member states. Overall, 10 member states of the European Union purchase natural gas from Azerbaijan, and there is potential to further expand this geography.
Today, for every country, energy security is one of the most important factors of national security. Azerbaijan has made a major contribution to the creation of infrastructure for transporting oil and gas in terms of political efforts, diplomatic activity, and financial investments. The Southern Gas Corridor is a vivid example of our joint efforts. This integrated pipeline system, stretching 3,500 kilometers, now serves as the main route for transporting Azerbaijan's natural gas to Europe,” President Ilham Aliyev noted.
