Migrants in Russia may be required to pay a 3% tax on the money they send to their home countries, APA's Moscow bureau reports.

A proposal has been put forward to impose a 3% tax on the money migrants earn in Russia and transfer abroad.

According to the report, a record $3.2 billion was transferred from Russia to Kyrgyzstan last year, while $15 billion was sent to Uzbekistan and between $7 billion and $9 billion to Tajikistan.

According to Sergey Mironov, leader of the "A Just Russia" faction in the State Duma, the mandatory tax would generate at least 45 billion rubles in additional budget revenue.

The lawmaker said the state budget currently receives nothing from these transfers, while only payment systems and banks collect commissions.
