Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has met with the new representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Bik Lum, Azerbaijani MFA told APA.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov congratulated Ms Bik Lum on her appointment and wished her success in her new position.
During the meeting, the minister informed the counterpart about the previous Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and its consequences, stating that as a result of Armenia's ethnic cleansing policy, more than 1 million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced persons and that he recalled with pleasure the High Commissioner for Refugees' cooperation with our country during this difficult period, which coincided with Azerbaijan's first years of independence.
The minister also mentioned the intensive restoration and reconstruction works carried out in the liberated territories in the post-conflict period, and noted that as part of these efforts, IDPs have already begun to return to the villages of Agali and Talish. Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that our country is also determined to reintegrate Armenian residents.
In addition, despite Azerbaijan's peace initiatives, Armenia's military and political provocations have been brought to attention. It was emphasized that Armenia, which did not create opportunities for the missions of international organizations during the period of occupation, has recently been trying to use international organizations for its own insidious intentions, which is unacceptable.
The UN representative expressed her satisfaction with the level of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the organization she represents, and said that she will try to maintain this positive dynamic in her newly appointed position and will spare no effort in this direction. It was noted that numerous projects have been implemented for Azerbaijani IDPs over the past 30 years, and that they are ready to be supported by the institution they represent in order to ensure their return to their homeland.
During the meeting, opinions were exchanged on regional issues of mutual interest.
