He noted that the Council has a sensitive approach toward journalism and journalists.
“Any issue is assessed in light of freedom of speech and expression. That’s where the sensitivity toward the issue comes from,” said Amashov.
He added that trying someone working in the journalism area is hard and undesired. Regrettably, there are at times attempts to manipulate freedom of speech and expression in this kind of situations. I think the Azerbaijani government too approaches this matter with much sensitivity. Any country that declares democratic ideas wouldn’t like a journalist to stand trial there,” Amashov stressed.
The council chairman noted that there are some other aspects of Rauf Mirgadirov’s case that draw attention.
“He is charged with treasury, Article 274 of the Criminal Code. I came to the conclusion that in the current situation the fairest decision can be made by the court. In any case, let’s remember that freedom of speech and expression cannot stand above loyalty to the motherland,” said Amashov.
