Azerbaijani Press Council: Russian media mainly cites Armenian sources

The occupation of Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region by Armenians was also underlined by these media outlets, said Amashov.

The Turkish media also seriously and objectively reacted to the recent incidents on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, according to the MP.

However, the materials disseminated by some media outlets, news portals and TV channels of Russia regarding the recent incidents between Azerbaijan and Armenia expressed support to Armenia’s position, Amashov said.

Though Russia’s leading media agencies covered the incidents objectively, unfortunately, some Russian media outlets demonstrated a biased approach to the issue, he added.

“The Russian media mostly tries to show itself as neutral. However, there are some interesting points which overshadow the neutrality of the Russian media. For example, some media outlets – Interfax, lenta.ru, vzglyad.ru, etc. mainly refer to Armenian sources and express support to Armenia’s position,” the MP said.

Unfortunately, in some cases, the incidents between Azerbaijan and Armenia are presented as hostility between Christians and Muslims. Especially “regnum.ru” refers to the issue in this way, indicating that Turkey is behind the recent developments on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, Amashov stressed.

Russia media mainly cites Armenian sources, the Press Council chairman said.

“Russian media also highlights the statements of Armenian officials. Mostly, media outlets refute initial statements, but most people are not interested in refutation. So, disseminated report reaches its goal. The refutation becomes unimportant,” he added.

Amashov noted another interesting point is that Nagorno-Karabakh isn’t presented as the Azerbaijani region or occupied territory. “Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan are presented as separate sides. As if Azerbaijan does not restore its territorial integrity, but wants to occupy the territories of an independent state. We will try to eliminate such cases,” he said.
