Built-up areas in Azerbaijan have increased by 55% over 25 years, APA-Economics reports, citing a UN report.
It was noted that the area of built-up (urbanized) land in Azerbaijan increased from 590.1 square kilometers in 2000 to 914.1 square kilometers in 2025. According to the report, the total increase in built-up areas over the last 25 years amounted to 324 square kilometers.
According to the data, the built-up area in cities also increased during the same period, rising from 113.2 square kilometers in 2000 to 211.6 square kilometers in 2025. This shows that urban spaces have nearly doubled in physical size.
The report states that the built-up area per capita increased overall from 72 square meters to 88 square meters over 25 years, while in cities this figure rose from 41 square meters to 50 square meters.
According to the UN assessment, these figures confirm that urban expansion is accompanied not only by population growth but also by the spatial growth of cities.
