The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been a reliable partner of “Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC in many areas, and today our cooperation is moving to a new, transformative stage, said ADY Chairman Rovshan Rustamov at the presentation of the decarbonization project within the framework of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC's partnership with ADB, APA-Economics reports.
“ADY is proud to be the first state railway company in the Caucasus and Central Asia region to develop a comprehensive decarbonization program with ADB. Together, we have already prepared ADY’s Decarbonization Policy and Framework, and these documents are fully aligned with Azerbaijan’s National Development Strategies, ADY’s 2030 Strategic Directions, the Paris Agreement, and global sustainability standards. Now, through this project, we are putting this strategic framework into practice.”
“The project we started today will also help in the preparation of a fully structured investment program aimed at the development of renewable energy within our railway infrastructure. In addition to technical issues, the study will cover the financial, economic, environmental, and social aspects of the project, which will ensure that the project is both effective and sustainable,” the ADY head noted.
According to him, the project comes at a time when Azerbaijan is increasingly becoming an important transport hub between East and West, North and South. As the volume of cargo along the Middle Corridor and North-South route increases, the competitiveness of our railway system depends on its operation being more efficient, reliable, and with a lower carbon footprint. Decarbonization, in turn, strengthens all three of these directions.
