European Union car sales slump for sixth straight month

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association said that this figure marked the sixth consecutive month of decline in demand for new cars this year.

Car registrations fell 9.6 percent in September across the European Union, with a total of 1,227,645 units registered, ACEA said in a statement. Car registrations had fallen 12.9 percent in August, it stated. Car registrations fell in all major markets, with Germany, Italy and Spain recording marked falls. In contrast, registrations soared in the Republic of Ireland and Latvia.

Volkswagen AG, Europe’s largest auto maker by sales, posted a 5 percent fall in new-car registrations in September to 254,039 vehicles. PSA Peugeot-Citroen saw European registrations fall 7.3 percent on a year-to-year basis to 150,538 cars. French peer Renault SA posted an 8.9 percent decrease to 106,815 cars. Daimler AG’s registrations in Europe rose 6.5 percent year-to-year to 68,913 vehicles.

Ford Motor Co. suffered a 20 percent decrease to 106,356 new-car registrations in Europe. German luxury-car maker BMW AG was decreased to 0.1 percent to 72,650 cars. Toyota Motor Corp. posted a 21.3 percent decline to 54,883 cars, compared with a 6.9% fall to 37, 698 cars at Japanese peer Nissan Motor Co.

Italy’s Fiat SpA posted a 22 percent fall in new-car registrations last month to 85,134 vehicles. General Motors Co.’s European division were down 6.4 percent at 119,630 vehicles,
