Azerbaijan predicts ICT sector growth to exceed the world average this year

Baku. Aynur Veliyeva - APA-ECONOMICS. ICT sector is predicted to grow by 10% in Azerbaijan by the end of the year, said Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov.

“For comparison, I would like to note that global ICT sector growth will not exceed 3-4% this year,” he added.

According to him, the transition to electronic telephone exchanges is planned to be 100% complete by this yearned.

"This process is 85.7% complete in Baku, 82.6% in provinces and 83.3% in rural areas,” he added.

In his words, 80% of population uses mobile services and 27%-37% internet services.

"The number of mobile subscribers has grown by 752 000 from the beginning of the year to 7.3 million people. That is to say 82 mobile users per 100 people,” he noted.

He also said that the number of telephones per 100 people rose from 15.1 since the beginning of the year to 15.7, including from 33.5 to 34.2 in Baku, from 9.9 to 10.2 in provinces.

By 2012, the ministry intends to implement the transition from analogue to digital transmission, to continue "People’s Computer” Project, to work in the field of space industry and put into orbit satellites, implement e-Azerbaijan and e-government projects, and continue work on the Trans-Eurasian Information Superhighway Project.
