Former employee of Azadlig newspaper sentenced to pretrial detention

Baku. Fuad Jafarov – APA. A former employee of Azadlig newspaper has been sentenced to pretrial detention.

Law-enforcement bodies told APA that based on an appeal filed by former head of Kalbajar Region education department Mahammad Bagirov, Ganja City Main Police Office has launched a criminal case on Ershad Ibrahimov, an employee of Azadlig newspaper, under the Criminal Code’s article #182 (extortion by threats). The investigation of the case has already been completed and submitted to Ganja City Court of Grave Crimes. Ibrahimov has today been sentenced to pretrial detention.

Mahammad Bagirov faced charges under the Criminal Code’s article #308.2 (abuse of power).

Kalbajar resident Fargana Ahliman Alakbarova said on Youtube that Mahammad Baghirov offered her inmate relationship in return for a fake diploma, an apartment in Baku and a car.

Mahammad Baghirov said in his interview to APA that all of these are a provocation against him. He said that the ones, who did it, want to hurt him and cause his dismissal. “Someone wants to trap Mahammad and dismiss him. And the ones who shot and released the video are mediated by Ershad. Today if I said the girl any offensive word, let my honor be like the mostly stained Armenians. They all are children. I can only help them. Such kinds of works are not for me”, he said.

A criminal case has been launched by the Anti-Corruption Department under Prosecutor General based on the appeals of the Education Ministry on the illegal actions of officials of Ganja branch of Azerbaijan Teachers Institute and Kalbajar Region Education Department.

The investigation revealed a reason to suspect head of Kalbajar Region education department Mahammad Bagirov that he has recruited more than 30 people with fake diplomas by abusing his power. He faced charges under the Criminal Code’s article 308.2 (abuse of power).

Investigation is underway to identify other alleged crimes committed by officials of the education department.
