“Currently, Armenia is building a large metallurgical plant worth 70 million dollars in Arazdayan, the border region of Sadarak,” said Azerbaijani Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev at a Cross-border Cooperation Conference of prosecutor's offices of Azerbaijan and Türkiye held in Nakhchivan, APA reports.
The Prosecutor General noted that the construction of a metallurgical plant and the toxic substances’ spill into the Araz River, the second largest river of the South Caucasus, is a great crime: “We have discussed this many times and discussed it again with our Turkish colleagues over the past two days. Pollution of the Araz River directly affects the quality of water resources, as well as fauna and flora in this zone. Not only the Araz River will be polluted, but also the toxic gas released into the air will have a serious impact on fauna and flora as a result of the operation of the plant to be built near the Sadarak district. Also if the metallurgical plant begins to operate, it will lead to the destruction of the environment, ecosystem, and air pollution with toxic waste. Armenia again flagrantly violates the norms and principles of international law, especially the provisions of the UN Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention) of the UN Economic Commission for Europe. This is not the first case of Armenia's non-compliance with international environmental law norms".
