Round table on â€œDefamation Problems in Azerbaijanâ€?

Round table was held on â€œDefamation problems in Azerbaijanâ€? on the initiative of OSCE Baku Office and â€œYeni Nesilâ€? Journalists Union, APA reports. The last variant of draft law on Defamation was discussed in the meeting. The chief Democratic Journalistsâ€™ League, the member of working group established to work out the draft law Yadigar Mammadli noted that adoption of this law will put an end to divergences between Government and governmental institutions and will pave the way for legal settlement of the problems. The chief of â€œYeni Nesilâ€? Journalists Union Arif Aliyev stated that the main goal to work out the law is to put an end to the punishment of press representatives on Criminal Code. The president of Constitution Researches Foundation Alimammad Nuriyev pointed out the defects of the law and made his proposals. He said that the limit put on freedom of expression have been reduced.
â€œIt is important to co-ordinate the document with legal system,â€? he said.
Senior lecturer of Journalism faculty of Baku Sate University Zeynal Mammadli said that there are some divergences in some items and the name of draft law.
â€œOrdinary man does not understand what defamation is. It would be better to use more comprehensible word. For example, â€œLaw on Libelâ€?,â€? he said. The member of working group Gulamhuseyn Alibeyli said that he does not agree with all said about the problems and divergences. At the same time he said they will take it into account. /APA/
