Former candidate for parliament arrested in Azerbaijan

Goychay region police office told APA’s local bureau that Agil Mahmudov took AZN 5500 from the resident of the region Mubariz Agarahimov to help him release from arrest. He took money from six residents of the region, promised them work at the “21 esr” newspaper, high salary, and gave them counterfeit journalist certificates.

The investigations found out that Mahmudov is editor-in-chief of “Azad Yeni Fikir” and “Heftelik Azerbayjan” newspapers, chairman of Independent Editors Union and was nominated by Democratic Azerbaijan World Party for parliament. Criminal proceedings have been launched on the fact on article 178.2.2 (swindling) of the Criminal Code, investigation is underway.

Agil Mahmudov’s brother Adil Mahmudov was arrested by Ujar region police over swindling last week.
