MSTPD officials told APA that 64 141 traffic accidents were recorded on Azerbaijan’s highway from 1988 till 2012. 22 249 people were killed and 71 833 were injured as a result of traffic accidents.
According to the statistics the most traffic accidents and human losses over last 23 years were recorded in 1991. 1281 people were killed as a result of 3336 traffic accidents in that year. The least traffic accidents were reported in 1999-2000. 554 people were killed as a result of 1996 traffic accidents which happened in 1999 and 596 people were killed as a result of 1987 traffic accidents which happened in 2000.
In comparison, we should note that Azerbaijani army lost 14 000 people in the I Karabakh War, but in general our country lost about 30 000 people in this war.
