Prosecutor demands 15-year imprisonment for Azerbaijani citizen accused of cooperating with Al-Qaeda

Judge Rasim Sadikhov presided over the process. Public prosecutor addressed the court. He demanded 15-year imprisonment for Rahim Salmanov.

According to the indictment, resident of Gusar resident Rahim Salmanov was wanted for four years. In 2006 he was arrested in the Russian Federation and extradited to Azerbaijan. He was one of the members of the 15-man gang consisting of the citizens of Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkey and Yemen and was trained in one of the camps in Pankisi Gorge together with “Revival of Islamic heritage” and Al-Qaeda organization. Salmanov faced charges under articles 126.3 (inflicting minor bodily harm, causing death of the sufferer), 29, 278 (seizing power, or attempting to withhold power), 279 (setting up illegal armed units or groups), 283 (stirring up national, racial, social or religious enmity) of the Criminal Code.

The other members of the gang – Arif Hajiyev was sentenced to life imprisonment, Emil Hagverdiyev to 10-year imprisonment, Hamdan Mohammed Ahmed Salme, HAji Chankayev, Abdulla, Abdulkarimov and Shirin Aliyev to 7-year imprisonment, Aslan berkov, Isa Islamov, Karanay Abdulhamidov, Arsen Gaziyev, Jembek Asadullayev, Mustafa Delibashlar, Inan Ahmad, Hayal Seljug Husnu, Hasan Agayev and Karakash Juma Shikhimam to 5-year imprisonment.

In 2008 Court of Grave Crimes sentenced Rahim Salmanov to 15-year imprisonment. But the courts of higher jurisdiction cancelled the judgment on Rahim Salmanov and sent back the case to the Court of Grave Crimes.
