Elchin Behbudov meets with persons accused of beating US and UK citizens

Chief of the committee told APA that he met with four persons – Gurbanov Vusal Fakhraddin, 25, Tagizadeh Adil Huseyn, 18, Huseynov Nazim Maharram, 26, and Huseynov Roman, 25. Elchin Behbudov said they were arrested, as they had beaten Silvia Davis and Amanda Ericsson. According to him, the detainees admit their guilt, criminal case has been launched on article 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code, they have been sentenced to two-month pretrial detention.
“They have been provided with legal aid by the government. They do not complain of the detention conditions and treatment. As regards the incident, they say they were drunk. The foreigners smiled at them, and they wanted to tease them. Adil Tagizadeh said he gave them his phone, but they threw it. That’s why he pushed her and her arm was broken. There was no political reason. They only wanted to get acquainted with them. They said they did not know that they are human rights defender and journalist,” he said.

Four unknown people attacked British citizen Silvia Davis and US citizen Amanda Ericsson at about 02.00 at night from June 15 to 16, 2011. The incident took place in Yasamal district of Baku. Police received information about beating of the foreign citizens.

General Investigative Office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Investigative Department of the Baku City Police Office and Yasamal district police office conducted joint operational measures and detained resident of Khirdalan town, Vusal Gurbanov, 25, resident of Ramana district, Tagizadeh Adil, 18, residents of Nasimi district of Baku, Hasanov Roman, 22 and Huseynov Nazim as the suspects in beating US citizen Amanda Ericsson and British citizen Silvia Davis.

Ericsson and Davis has been working in Azerbaijan for the non-governmental organizations and organizing trainings for the journalists and civil society activists. Ericsson is working for The Washington Post and The New York Times too.
