Baku – APA. Thailand’s navy is sending its only aircraft carrier to evacuate as many as 800 tourists stranded on holiday resort islands after flooding throughout the rubber-producing southern region killed 11 people, APA reports quoting “The Sydney Morning Herald”.
The naval ship will transport tourists from Samui and Tao, islands in the Gulf of Thailand, to a port near Bangkok.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva travelled to the region yesterday to inspect the flooding.
Heavy rain has deluged eight southern provinces and killed 11 people since March 23, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said on its website. The wet weather has prompted airlines to cancel flights to tourist destinations and rubber producers to cut output.
