Baku – APA. The International Atomic Energy Agency has called a special summit to discuss safety procedures at nuclear plants, in the wake of the crisis at Japan’s crippled Fukushima plant, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.

Agency Chief Yukiya Amano said Monday the summit would probably be held in June in Vienna.

He said the agenda would include an assessment of the Japan crisis, lessons that can be learned from it and ways of strengthening the international response to such disasters.

The IAEA has come under criticism for what many say was its slow response to the Japan disaster, and alleged failure to communicate information about the crisis.

Agency officials say they lack the power to enforce nuclear safety standards, and can only publish the data given to them by Japanese authorities. The IAEA’s mission is to promote peaceful uses of atomic energy.
