The statement was made by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Eric Rubin during hearings on Azerbaijan at the Helsinki Commission, APA reports.

The diplomat said the United States enjoys growing economic cooperation with Azerbaijan, adding that the cooperation between the two countries will mainly develop in the areas of security, economy, energy, and democracy.

“For over 20 years since Azerbaijan’s independence, the United States has been working with Azerbaijan to promote a secure, prosperous, and democratic society. Azerbaijan has been a key partner for the United States and NATO from Kabul to Kosovo. Azerbaijan currently has 94 troops serving in Afghanistan and has committed to remain in the country beyond 2014. Azerbaijan is the keynote in the Northern Distribution Network (NDN) and en route sending nonmilitary goods in and out of Afghanistan. As such, strengthening the Caspian security, countering terrorism, stemming the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and enhancing maritime domain awareness continue to be top priorities for U.S. assistance to Azerbaijan”.

Touching upon the U.S. policy on the events that are going on in the post-Soviet area, Eric Rubin said the principle of territorial integrity that Washington is defending in the example of Ukraine applies to all the countries in the region: “Azerbaijan lives in a very dangerous neighborhood. It has Russia to the north and Iran to the south. These are very real concerns, and we are committed to working with the Azerbaijani government to help them strengthen their ability to defend their territorial integrity and sovereignty”.

Eric Rubin also talked about the Azerbaijan-Israel relations, which he called exemplary: “These relations have played a critical role in terms of counter-terrorism and we praise it. We reconfirm the importance of Azerbaijan. And Azerbaijan’s role in the peaceful operation in Afghanistan and the area of energy is also worth noting. We welcome this. It’s a top priority for us to support Azerbaijan’s independence and territorial integrity”.
