Azerbaijani Embassy in Turkey: â€˜The police have insulted our diplomat, used physical force on himâ€™

Baku. Mayis Alizadeh, Rashad Suleymanov – APA. “On March 29, 2014 in Turkey’s capital city of Ankara, a diplomat of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Turkey, without any infringements, was grossly detained by police while driving the embassy’s official car which had a diplomatic state number plate with his family inside”, the Azerbaijani embassy in Turkey told APA’s Turkey correspondent.

The report says the diplomat was also insulted: “The police insulted our diplomat with abusive language, treating him in a manner that entirely contradicts the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The police used a fierce physical force on him”.

The embassy also said the Turkish Foreign Ministry was sent a note in that regard on the same day. Apart from an investigation on the police at the Ministry of Interior Affairs, the Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office has also launched a criminal case, “The process is underway, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Turkey is closely following the issue”.

Milliyyet and Vatan newspapers of Turkey have today released information that an incident took place between an employee of the Azerbaijani embassy in Turkey and local police. It is reported that the Ankara police has detained the car of the Azerbaijani diplomat who violated traffic rules. The problem came about when one of the police officers demanded a document. Giving the document, the Azerbaijani diplomat said he and his car can not be stopped according to diplomatic rules. But the police persisted that they were not going to let the vehicle go unless relevant procedures get done. At that the moment, a clash broke out between them.

After that, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Turkey contacted the Foreign Ministry and stated their complaint about the stoppage of the diplomat’s car. And the Turkish Foreign Ministry informed the Ministry of Interior Affairs about the fact. The ministry officials said they will contact the embassy to investigate the incident and even apologize to the diplomat. Newspapers say that the embassy and diplomat have withdrawn their complaints.
