Azerbaijani, Iranian presidents sign Joint Declaration - <span style="color: red;">UPDATED

The Joint Declaration on friendship and cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran envisages the following provisions: 

 

- The sides reaffirmed their willingness to take relevant actions to prevent the activities of various organizations, groups and individuals directed against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the two countries;

 

- In accordance with the principles of the UN Charter, confirming the inadmissibility of aggressive acts, use of force or threatening about use of force in intergovernmental relations, the sides do not recognize the violation of internationally recognized borders by force and supports the resolution of conflicts in compliance with the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders. Taking into account the above-mentioned, the sides reiterated the importance of the soonest resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict by peaceful means;

 

- Focusing on the generally recognized norms and principles of the international law, the sides reaffirmed their support for the right of all countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes within the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA);

 

- The sides will make further efforts to implement joint energy projects with the aim of developing equal and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries. In this regard, they stressed the need for an early signing of the draft agreement on continuation of the construction and maintenance of "Khudaferin" and "Maiden Tower" hydroelectric power stations between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

 

- The sides emphasized the importance of continuation of cooperation between the Caspian littoral states to agree on the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea.

 

- The sides expressed confidence that the Declaration would strengthen trust and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.
