Baku. Ramil Mammadli – APA. The reports that Azerbaijani journalist and human rights defender Shahnaz Gulami, who was detained by Iranian intelligence bodies on November 9, got 6-month suspended sentence are not true. Committee for Protection of Shahnaz Gulami’s Rights told APA that the journalist’s lawyer Nagi Mahmudi refuted the reports. He said Gulami was still in prison. The lawyer said the journalist’s case was being investigated by the court.
“Shahnaz Gulami is held in Tabriz jail and it is not known what decision will be passed,” he said.
The lawyer also said Shahnaz Gulami had been transferred to the medical unit of the jail.
Shahnaz Gulami was in prison for her political activity in 1999-2003. In 2006, she was imprisoned for her participation in the pickets in connection with the caricatures published in the “Iran” newspaper insulting the Azerbaijanis. Protesting against her arrest and detention conditions Shahnaz Gulami went on hunger strike for 10 days in December, 2008.
