Azerbaijan addresses Nobel Prize Committee against decision on awarding Gorbachev

Members of the association, made this appeal during the anniversary of the events of January 20 are asked to review and revoke the decision of the Committee in October 1990 on awarding the ex-president of the former Soviet Union, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev Nobel Peace Prize: “We are quite sure that Gorbachev is not worthy of this award and harms the name and honor of this highest award, as a whole prestige of your Committee, because this person kindle military confrontations and bloodsheds, but not peace.

It is noted that as a result of the order on the use of weapons against the people, who stood up for peace, freedom and independence, given by Mikhail Gorbachev, then-president of USSR in January 1990 contradicting to the Constitution of Azerbaijan SSR and the requirements of relevant international legal statements, 170 people, including women, children and old people were brutally killed in the country’s capital and other cities. Dozens of people were injured, missing; more than 700 people were arrested. Country and people suffered the huge material and moral damages: “Gorbachev stir up Armenian-Azerbaijani war and ongoing Armenian aggressive policy, which resulted in seizure of Nagorno-Karabakh - the historical territory of Azerbaijan and killing of more than 20 thousand people, wounding, missing, capture of hundreds of people, more than 60 billion dollars material damages to the country. Mikhail Gorbachev also is directly responsible for the events in Vilnius, Tbilisi, Chechnya, Tajikistan, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which resulted in numerous casualties. It is inadmissible to award perpetrator of such acts with a high award as a Nobel Peace Prize; by contrast he must stand trial and be punished for the destruction of many people.

Public Association urged the Committee to review this decision taken 22 years ago and to take measures for deprivation the award given to Gorbachev.
