According to analyst, for Europe and the broader West, the most important energy producing country in the Caspian region is Azerbaijan.

“Azerbaijan is also important because it is already supplying Western countries with oil through the BTC pipeline, its gas goes through the South Caucasus Pipeline and it is the most likely producer country at the moment to supply the Nabucco gas pipeline”.

Speaking about the US’s Caspian policy Mr. Petersen propose that, the key US Government organizations, such as State Department, Energy Department and National Security Council should have specialists on this issue.

“There are lots of independent experts on Caspian region and they should be dealing with this, not the experts on Russia and other spheres” – he added.
Analyst also believes that US can play a moderator role between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan regarding the dispute over the oil fields in the Caspian Sea.
“I think, the more US is active in the region, the more respect it will get. In such case, even Russia will be respectful towards US. The less US is active in the region, the more it will lose”.
