Swiss Foreign Minister: â€œPutting into force Protocol 14 will open European Convention on Human Rights membership opportunity for European Unionâ€

Putting into force Protocol 14 of European Convention on Human Rights will open an ample membership opportunity for European Union, the head of the Swiss foreign department Michelin Kalmi-Rey said in her statement during the conference devoted to the future of European Human Rights Court in Swiss city of Interlaken.

Ms Rey appreciated Russiaâ€™s ratifying Protocol of European Convention on Human Rights, stressing that Russia moved to the list of 46 members which already ratified the protocol before presenting to the European Council.

â€œThis is wonderful news for all of Europeans. The ratified protocol will create opportunity for effective review of complaints by European Convention on Human Rights and make a great contribution to strengthening of fundamental laws on our continent. Moreover, Lisbon agreement and the protocol which will is soon to come into force will open European Convention on Human Rights membership opportunity for European Union. Furthermore, there is dire need for taking various measures for improving role of European Convention on Human Rights in securing fundamental laws and freedoms in Europe. This is the key issue in todayâ€™s conference initiated by Swiss government which is aimed at further continuation of efforts by 47 members joined European Convention on Human Rights on making joint decisions that will create opportunity for more effective work of European Human Rights Courtâ€, she said.
