British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has floated the idea of hosting the 2042 FIFA World Cup in the United Kingdom, APA reports citing The Times newspaper.
According to the report, Burnham put forward his idea at a meeting with city mayors held in the prime minister's new office in Manchester. The prime minister is reportedly in talks with the Football Association and the English Premier League about the possibility of submitting a bid to host the tournament.
According to The Times, Burnham's government is also preparing to bid to host the 2040 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The publication noted that Burnham wants to organize the competitions in cities in northern Britain to boost regional economic growth. Previously, as mayor of Greater Manchester, Burnham urged the government to ensure the Olympics are held in the north of England.
England has hosted the World Cup once in its history – in 1966. That was the only time English footballers won the World Cup.
