APA conducted an interview with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mexico to Azerbaijan, Maria Victoria Romero Caballero.
New directions are being identified for Azerbaijan-Mexico relations
– Madam Ambassador, my first question concerns the current state of Azerbaijan-Mexico relations. How do you assess the current state of relations between our countries? Is a transition to a new stage in relations expected?
– Relations between Mexico and Azerbaijan have further strengthened, and we are working hard in this direction. We carry out and coordinate this work not only from Baku but also through the Azerbaijani Embassy in Mexico City.
For example, this year, for the first time, a high-level delegation from our country visited Azerbaijan. A delegation comprising a minister, a deputy minister, and the governor of Mexico City visited Azerbaijan in May to participate in WUF13. This visit reflects the importance of Azerbaijan to us.
Also, two important documents have been signed between our countries this year. One of them concerns diaspora issues, while the other relates to the field of defense and security. Azerbaijan and Mexico will cooperate in the field of defense and security. This is very important because new directions are being identified for our relations.
As you already know, Mexico has appointed its first military attaché to Azerbaijan, and through this, our relations are being further strengthened. Mexico’s military attaché will contribute to the implementation of cooperation in the defense sector and to establishing contacts with the relevant military institutions. I believe in this. This, in turn, demonstrates the importance Mexico attaches to its relations with Azerbaijan.
Mexico and Azerbaijan have several features in common
– What steps are being taken to intensify cooperation between Mexico and Azerbaijan in the field of transport?
– Mexico and Azerbaijan have several features in common. One of them is that both countries are located in strategically important regions. Both Mexico and Azerbaijan play a connecting role between different directions. This is very important because, in the future, we can work on projects through which we can mutually benefit from the connectivity and links that both countries have.

– Is it possible to launch a direct flight between Azerbaijan and Mexico?
– It would really be very good to have a direct flight from Mexico to Azerbaijan. For now, there are no negotiations on this. However, it is a very good idea, and we can explore it. This would particularly be an expression of the interest shown by the peoples of the two countries in getting to know each other better. This could be one of the good tasks facing both us and your embassy in Mexico City in the future.
A meeting between companies from the two countries was held just a few weeks ago
– Is the participation of Mexican companies in the reconstruction projects in Karabakh and East Zangezur on the agenda?
– Not yet. However, just a few weeks ago, a meeting was held between companies from the two countries. This is a very good step in terms of enabling the business sectors of both countries to get to know each other better. The meeting was very successful. They decided to continue getting to know each other better. We will probably be able to organize business missions to both countries in the future. This could be a very important and significant project that we can implement in the future. I hope it will be possible to realize this soon.
We have an active agenda of cultural events in Azerbaijan
– In what other areas do you see potential for cooperation between our countries?
– One of the great things we are doing here is our cultural projects. At the same time, we are also working in this direction in Mexico. As I mentioned, our countries need to get to know each other better, and we can do this through culture. This is one of the important areas. We have an active agenda of cultural events in Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani Embassy in Mexico City is also working in this direction. We have also held talks with universities regarding student mobility. They are interested in reaching various agreements, and this could create a very good opportunity for student exchange.
