Turkey’s former interior minister Meral Aksener, who has recently been expelled from the Nationalist Movement Party's (MHP), will run for president of the country in the 2019 election.
This was announced by Koray Aydin, who resigned from his position as a deputy of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and joined a new party set to be founded by Meral AkÅŸener, APA reported.
Aydin said he believes that Erdogan has no chance to win the election over his rival Aksener.
“According to public opinion polls, Erdogan will not be able to win in the first round in case that all parties participate in the elections with their candidates. In the second round, Meral Aksener will be a challenger to Erdogan. And he can not defeat Aksener in this round,” he added.
Aksener is set to announce the creation of a new party in the city of Samsun on October 29 – Republic Day. The new party is said to try to gather all segments of the population though the center of the new political force is those expelled or retired from MHP. The name of the party is not known yet.
Approved on April 16, 2017, the constitutional amendment in Turkey will come into force after the presidential elections in 2019. Turkey will officially become the presidential republic.
