Georgia. Nizami Mammadzade – APA. Georgia today commemorates April 9 tragedy.
APA’s Georgian bureau reports that visiting the parliamentary building since last night, Tbilisi residents, Georgian state and government officials, deputies, as well as diplomatic corpus representatives paid tribute to the memory of those who died for the independence of Georgia.
Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Speaker of the Parliament David Usupashvil, Patriarch Ilia II, other state and government officials, as well as deputies, opposite members, various party representatives laid wreaths and flowers at the monument erected in memory of April 9 tragedy and prayed for the victims.
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Georgia Azer Huseyn and the embassy officials also laid a wreath at the monument.
On April 9, 1989, many people were tragically killed as Soviet troops attacked peaceful protesters in Tbilisi. After this tragedy, Georgia declared its independence.
