Baku-APA. Albanian Minister of Interior Sajmir Tahiri praised a joint operation by state police, the tax office and the gambling inspectorate of the Ministry of Finance to crack down on illegal gambling parlours and betting shops across the country, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Tahiri vowed to continue the country-wide crackdown "until the last illegal gambling dens and gambling machines are sequestered."
Tahiri said that the operation, codenamed "End of Madness," involved at least 6,000 policemen, aided by over 500 inspectors from the tax office and the gambling inspectorate.
"I believe we have made first significant step to heal a grave social wound with serious effects upon the budget of the Albanian families, often becoming a source of crime. We have also made a significant step towards restoring rules and ensuring fair and equal conditions for the free entrepreneurship on Albania," Tahiri said.
