"About 30 people are injured, and four people were killed, including one rescue service worker," said rescue service spokeswoman Inga Vetere.
Deputy mayor of Riga Andris Ameriks told local TV that some 50 people were still trapped after the collapse.
The supermarket, built in 2011, belongs to the Lithuanian-owned Maxima chain, the second largest retailer in the country.
According to rescue workers, the accident might have been caused by a boiler explosion or linked to recent renovation on the supermarket.
