The World Health Organization (WHO) is closely monitoring the death of an employee of a laboratory conducting plague research in Russia’s Irkutsk region, WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said at a briefing in Geneva, Anadolu said, APA reports.
According to him, the woman died of severe pneumonia on October 2, but the cause of death has not yet been officially determined.
Lindmeier said that the Russian authorities had responded to the WHO’s request for information. According to him, an epidemiological investigation was conducted after an employee of Russia’s Irkutsk Research Anti-Plague Institute was diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia.
The WHO spokesperson noted that the Russian authorities have identified people who had contact with the case and are monitoring their condition. There is currently no information indicating that symptoms of the disease have developed among those individuals.
Russian health authorities are investigating whether the death was linked to pneumonic plague. At present, plague infection has not been officially confirmed.
