Ukrainian forces have succeeded in pushing back Russian troops in a number of positions around Kyiv after Ukraine claimed it had liberated the northwestern suburb of Irpin, APA reports citing the UK Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday,
The ministry said that Ukrainian troops had “some success” with localized counterattacks in areas including Irpin, Bucha, and Hostomel, all to the northwest of the capital, and had repelled Russian troops in a number of places.
It added, however, that Russian forces still posed a “significant threat” to the city. Russian forces continued to heavily shell the besieged port city of Mariupol, though the center of the city remained under Ukrainian control, it added.
Ukraine on Monday claimed that government forces had liberated Irpin, a strategically important suburb town north of Kyiv that has been the scene of heavy fighting since the war began.
Russian and Ukrainian military claims cannot be independently verified.
