Former British Home and Foreign Secretary James Cleverly announced on Saturday that he is resigning as the Conservative shadow housing minister to run for mayor of London, APA reports.
"I must be free to speak about every aspect of London's future and concentrate fully on winning this race," he explained.
Cleverly argued that the route to making Tory leader Kemi Badenoch the next prime minister "has got to be through success in London." He vowed to make London "once again, the best place in the world to live, work, invest and build a business." The next London mayoral election is scheduled for May 4, 2028. Current Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has been in the position since 2016, has not yet announced that he will run for reelection.
