Twelve people were injured, one seriously, after a car rammed into pedestrians early Tuesday in a bar area in Albufeira, a popular seaside resort in southern Portugal's Algarve region, local authorities said, Xinhua reports.
The incident occurred at around 3 a.m. local time (0200 GMT) when a 35-year-old man drove the vehicle toward a group of people and ignored repeated orders from police to stop, according to the Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) cited by Lusa news agency.
Police fired several shots into the air in an attempt to stop the vehicle. Still, the car kept driving, hit some pedestrians and two GNR officers, and then collided with another car and stopped. The driver tried to flee on foot but was arrested.
The suspect had a blood alcohol level of 1.29 grams per liter and also underwent toxicology tests. He faces charges including aggravated bodily harm, drunk driving and dangerous driving.
