The first national "Altay" tanks were handed over to the Turkish armed forces for testing, said Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President on Twitter, APA reports.

"We are handing over the new generation Altay tank to our heroic army, which will become Türkiye's modern main battle tank," said the Turkish President.

The "Altay" battle vehicle was named in memory of General Fakhreddin Altay, who fought in the Turkish War of Independence in 1919-1923. The tank was designed almost entirely by Turkish defense enterprises. Based on licenses granted to the government by the South Korean company "Hyundai," it was agreed to manufacture individual weapon pieces, including a 120 mm gun.

The 65-ton tank is outfitted with missile weapons and an active protection system, making it impenetrable to modern-generation armor. Control of tank fire is carried out using a computer system.
