According to the PSNI, the explosive device was discovered in Hope Street, Larne, British media reported.

"Army technical officers have examined a suspicious object discovered in the area and have declared it to be a viable pipe bomb-type device, which has been taken away for further examination", a spokesman said.

The spokesman added that the security alert in the Hope Street area of Larne is now over.

Earlier last week, a pipe bomb was thrown at a police vehicle in the Culmore Gardens area of west Belfast.

The PSNI said the device did not explode and no-one was injured, but that the bomb was thrown when police forces were answering a call which later came to be a hoax.

A number of resident were evacuated, according to Councillor Tim Attwood.
