The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, met with Director General of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) Kathryne Bomberger, who is on a visit to the country, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told APA.
During the meeting, the sides discussed the Azerbaijan-ICMP cooperation agenda, efforts to determine the fate of missing persons in the post-conflict period, as well as the importance of international cooperation in this field.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that the fate of nearly 4,000 Azerbaijanis remains unknown as a result of Armenia's military aggression and stressed that the issue of missing persons is one of Azerbaijan's priority humanitarian concerns. In this context, it was emphasized that the full disclosure by Armenia of information regarding the locations of mass graves, burial sites, and minefield maps is of critical importance for determining the fate of missing persons.
The sides underlined the particular importance of the provision on missing persons in the draft Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Interstate Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, noting the need for practical steps to build confidence and address humanitarian consequences in this regard.
The meeting highly praised the effective partnership established between the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons and the International Commission on Missing Persons, emphasizing that this cooperation is of great importance for determining the fate of missing persons, strengthening identification capabilities, and applying international best practices.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that, following the 44-day Patriotic War, Azerbaijan remained committed to its humanitarian obligations and carried out extensive search operations despite the complex security environment and mine threat. He pointed out that the remains of more than 2,000 Armenian servicemen discovered during these operations had been handed over to the Armenian side. This step was described as a clear example of Azerbaijan's respect for international humanitarian law and its constructive approach to humanitarian issues.
The meeting also provided information on the mass graves discovered in Azerbaijan's liberated territories, the exhumation and identification work carried out there, as well as the measures implemented by the relevant state authorities.
The sides also exchanged views on regional issues of mutual interest and ICMP's activities in other countries.
