Ukraine and Sweden have signed an agreement on the purchase of Swedish Gripen E fighter jets. Along with the aircraft, Kyiv will receive equipment and technical support, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, APA reports citing RBC Ukraine.

"Together with Sweden, we continue strengthening Ukraine's combat aviation. Today, our countries signed an agreement for the procurement of 16 Gripen E fighter jets. Importantly, the aircraft will come with a package of related equipment, technical assistance, and support," the President said.

He added that, under previous agreements, the Ukrainian Air Force is expected to receive its first 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets in early 2027.

Preparation for the deal

Fedorov noted that the teams from the defense ministries of Ukraine and Sweden, together with the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV), had completed all the necessary preparatory work.

He said that Ukraine and Sweden are cooperating in several areas to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities:

- Operational track. The delivery of the first 16 Gripen C/D fighter jets in early 2027 will allow Ukraine to integrate the platform more quickly, train pilots and technical personnel, adapt infrastructure, and enhance the combat capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force.

- Strategic track. Ukraine will purchase 16 Gripen E fighter jets using EU funding and with support from the United Kingdom. Deliveries of these aircraft are scheduled to begin in early 2029.

"In addition to the aircraft, Ukraine will receive the necessary equipment, logistics, and technical support. Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel are already undergoing training in Sweden," Fedorov said.
