German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul acknowledged a shortage of funds to pay for military aid to Ukraine, APA reports.
"There really isn't enough money [to pay for Ukraine's weapons], that's true," Wadephul said on ARD television during a visit to Ukraine. This was the minister's response to a journalist's question about whether Berlin should increase its support amid the acute funding shortage, despite its status as a key ally of Kyiv.
The German Foreign Minister also noted that he had discussed this issue in detail with the new Ukrainian Minister of Defense. "And I need to convey this information to Berlin and Brussels. Consultations with European foreign ministers, and especially with our [German] Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, will show what else we can do, what others can do, and what funds, perhaps already planned for next year, we could allocate a little earlier. This will again be a shared goal for many," Wadephul emphasized.
At the same time, he clarified that he could not say for sure whether this would be implemented.
