The United States has appealed to the Prime Minister of Australia regarding five Iranian women’s national football team players currently in the city of Gold Coast, US President Donald Trump wrote on a social media account, APA reports.
“Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the forced return of Iran’s women’s national soccer team to their country. If they are sent back, they will most likely be killed. Mr. Prime Minister, do not do this — give them asylum. If you do not, the United States will accept them. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump said.
According to foreign media reports, five members of Iran’s women’s national football team refused to sing the national anthem before a group-stage match against South Korea at the Asian Cup. The players reportedly contacted Australian police in advance to prevent potential danger.
While negotiations were ongoing in the hotel lobby, a chaotic situation unfolded. Individuals linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran reportedly entered the area searching for the players. Witnesses claim the five footballers fled the hotel and were pursued by individuals connected to the Iranian regime.
The players are currently under the protection of Australian police.
Several Iranian women footballers have requested asylum in Australia amid the chaotic events in Gold Coast.
The move was strongly criticized by a commentator on Iranian television, who described it as treason against the state — a crime that could be punishable by death.
