A plea agreement has been reached in the criminal case of former Georgian Defense Minister Juansher Burchuladze, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison, APA’s local bureau reports.
By a decision of the Tbilisi Court of Appeals, his prison sentence has been reduced to five years.
Under the terms of the agreement, Juansher Burchuladze will serve three years of his sentence in a penitentiary institution, while the remaining two years will be suspended. He will be released in two years.
The former minister will also have to pay a fine of 1 million lari. In addition, various types of his property have been confiscated in favor of the state.
Juansher Burchuladze’s relative Vasil Mkheidze and his former deputy Giorgi Khaindrava, who were arrested in the case and sentenced to eight years in prison, will be released at the end of this month.
It should be noted that Juansher Burchuladze was detained on September 11 last year. He was accused of abuse of official authority and legalization of illegal income. In April this year, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Tbilisi City Court.
Burchuladze served as Georgia’s Defense Minister from 2021 to 2024.
