The next trial of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on the case of illegally crossing the Georgian state border has been held, APA's Tbilisi correspondent reports.
Saakashvili's lawyer, Beka Basilaya, requested the cancellation of the detention order. He stated that the examination of evidence had been completed, and therefore, there were no grounds for maintaining the detention order. However, the state prosecutor disagreed with this request. According to the prosecutor, the application of the detention order is linked to certain threats and is not solely related to the destruction of evidence.
Judge Mikheil Dzhincolia, considering the possibility of the defendant committing new crimes and the risk of flight, did not grant the request.
Note that the investigation into former President Mikheil Saakashvili's illegal border crossing began on October 1, 2021.
