Baku-APA. The Russian Foreign Ministry declined to comment on a report saying Russia had expelled two Spanish diplomats in retaliation for the expulsion of two Russian diplomats in Madrid, local media reported on Tuesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.

"We are not commenting on this information," Interfax news agency quoted a source from the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying.

So far, no information was released on the official website of the foreign ministry.

Earlier on Tuesday, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported the expulsion of diplomats between the two countries, saying Spain expelled two Russians seven weeks ago accusing them of "activity incompatible with their diplomatic status" and Russia had responded in kind.

After the release of the news, Spain confirmed the reports on Tuesday in a statement.

Diplomatic formula implies the expelled diplomats were caught spying.

Earlier, Moscow and Madrid agreed to make 2011 the Russian Year in Spain and Spanish Year in Russia.

In December, Russia and Britain also mutually expelled their diplomats in a tit-for-tat action.
