Ramiz Mehdiyev: â€œSocial, economic and political achievements have turned Azerbaijan into a significant actor of the international systemâ€

The discussion of the national consultations on post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals at today’s event is a clear example of the priorities of comprehensive activities of Azerbaijan,” said Head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, academician Ramiz Mehdiyev addressing the discussions dedicated to the national consultations on post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals, APA reports.

Mehdiyev stated that according to the World Bank’s Gross National Income per capita, Azerbaijan falls under the group of upper-middle-income countries and in the UN Development Programme report the country falls under the group of “high human development” countries. Having achieved the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Azerbaijan was able to bring human capital to a high level of development. This does not mean that Azerbaijan would lose its significance as an energy state. On the contrary, Azerbaijan has defined new bases for development and will improve the economy basing on the knowledge and innovations and meeting the requirements and challenges of the globalizing world.”

Head of the Presidential Administration said that Azerbaijan is one of the 80 countries selected to hold National Consultations on Sustainable Development Goals.

“Coincidence between “Azerbaijan 2020: Vision of the Future” Development Concept adopted on the initiative of President in 2012 and UN Sustainable Development Goals shows that the Azerbaijani state is developing taking into account global challenges and tendencies. “Azerbaijan 2020: Vision of the Future” Development Concept is not restricted to the economic aspects of development, it also covers establishment of efficient social defense system, institutional capacity building, development of the civil society, protection of the cultural heritage, protection of environment. As seen, Azerbaijan’s future development policy does not only cover UN Sustainable Development Goals, it is at the same time a comprehensive concept for Azerbaijan to hold a decent place on the global scale. Understanding our regional and global responsibility, we are committed to actively participating in this initiative of the UN,” he said.
