Six years have passed since the liberation of Azerbaijan’s Jabrayil city from occupation, APA reports.
Jabrayil was liberated on October 4, 2020, as a result of successful combat operations carried out during the counter-offensive launched by the Azerbaijani Army on September 27, 2020.
In the first days of the fighting, the Azerbaijani Army broke through the front line and liberated a number of villages in Jabrayil district.
President of Azerbaijan and Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev announced the liberation of Jabrayil city in his address to the nation on October 4. He also announced the liberation of nine villages of Jabrayil district — Karkhulu, Shukurbayli, Yukhari Maralyan, Charakan, Dashkasan, Horovlu, Dajal, Mahmudlu and Jafarabad.
Jabrayil became the first district center liberated during the 44-day Patriotic War.
A medal “For the Liberation of Jabrayil” was established in Azerbaijan, and servicemen of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces who demonstrated personal courage and bravery during the combat operations for the liberation of Jabrayil district were awarded the medal.
Under an order signed by President Ilham Aliyev on July 31, 2023, October 4 was officially established as Jabrayil City Day.
Jabrayil district had been occupied by Armenian armed forces on August 23, 1993. According to Azerbaijani official sources, settlements and historical and cultural monuments in the district were extensively destroyed during the period of occupation.
